Newstead — 6, 7, 8 October 2017

An engaging and exciting schedule of events is promised for this year’s Newstead Short Story Tattoo.  Venues for this year’s Tattoo are all “west side” and include the very beautiful Butterland (Tivey St), The Railway Hotel, and of course The Newstead Racecourse.  Guests include Tony Birch, noted academic and prize winning author who recently released his new short story collection Common People.  Tony will be delivering the Gary Foley Lecture alongside  Lidia Thorpe, an Indigenous constitutional expert, who will delve into the concept of Aboriginal separatism. The Tattoo will set things alight by launching matters with an all-female comedy night starring seasoned Jewish veteran Justine Sless, the hilarious and talented Annabel Tellis (who gave us “Come Shane” last time around) and sometimes local Penny Tangey who will deliver humorous anecdotes about working in a bacon factory.  Other artists and presenters include Manisha Anjali, an emerging Fijian born poet and “folk” storyteller and poet, the sublime rambling poetry of Pi-O,  Simon Carroll who will perform the “life of Adam Lindsay Gordon” with banjo in hand to name but a few.  Of course there will be a host of locals including Jenny Valentish, Kirsten Krauth, the horror-master and former editor of “Bloodsongs” Steve Proposch, Yasmin O’Sullivan and Rachel Valentyne from the very cool Get Outta’ Town Blog.  Other highlights are a live improvised music performance to the beautiful, powerful, socially raw pictures of Melbourne photographer Alan K Jordan.  This will cokme courtesy of guitarist (from Newstead band The Styvos) Neil Boyack, and tech-dub guru Cris Sirc who is about to embark on his first tour of China.  There’ll be a “Butterland Bookstore” on Saturday 7th and a “Loose Cannons Lunch” on Sunday 8th with an open mic for all those locals who want to tell a story and get amongst it. Most sessions will be $10, a couple will be entry by donation, please check all details for how to get tickets, dates, and times by looking at the website, or the NSST Facebook site.  They will be up soon. We urge all  our Newsteadian friends, sponsors and supporters to get “up and about” and get behind this year’s Tattoo. Keep a close eye on Facebook or the NSST website for updates www.newsteadtattoo.org . All enquiries please text Neil Boyack on 0409685621, or message via the NSST Facebook site.
